Hello World.

If you’re reading this, then you’ve probably taken a wrong turn on the internet. You were probably minding your own business, looking for a power rating of a certain level, searching for a great tutorial on crushing Dr. Pepper cans, or perhaps you found me from a comment I left on a design blog (in which case, I thoroughly apologize for offending you and/or being completely wrong). Well, as fate would have it, you ended up here, and you’re still reading, so allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ryan. I’m a graphic designer with a to-do list, but I never seem to get anything done.

Enter this blog

I’m not a blogger. I don’t write. Some would argue I lack a certain “ability to communicate with other intelligent life.” Which is why I’m starting a blog. That’s the kind of thing that passes for logic in my world. I assure you, though, I have perfectly good reasons.

First, I want to grow in my coding skills; this blog is my personal sandbox for HTML/CSS/JS/PHP experiments. Second, I want to grow in my critique skills; I plan on pulling apart some of the web/print designs that catch my eye and talking about that here. Third, I want to improve my overall design process, which means I need to know what my current process is; I plan on learning more about how I do things by posting case studies of some of my projects.

I have put together what I believe are timely, concrete goals that I can measure:

  • One blog post every week. This, frankly, scares me. I’m not what you would someone that “commands competency of the English language.”
  • Build my digital portfolio out to launch June 1. I’m a graphic designer in the 21st century and I don’t have a digital portfolio. Yeah, I know, that’s crazy, right? I believe I need one. I will build one.
  • Style this blog. If you’re lucky enough to be viewing the initial version of this website, you will notice it’s a very basic WordPress theme. I really want a better sense of the content before I actually do a full on theme. But it will happen. I promise.

Will I actually follow through? I have no idea. There’s a good chance that it’s now the year 2025, this is the only post on this blog, and you’re asking yourself “What the heck is WordPress?” In that case, how’s living in the future? Do we all have 50’s style robots as personal servants? Can I now eat an entire steak meal in pill form? But I digress.

Wish me luck (pretty please?)

If you could take the time to leave words of encouragement for me, or if you just want to tell me you hate the way my face looks (both valid reasons for commenting), please do so. And while you’re at it, follow me on Twitter. I occasionally say things there. And I follow some amazing people, too.

See you next week (hopefully)!
